California Recycling & CBE Fees

California has implemented a new waste recycling fee for Covered Battery-Embedded products (CBE waste recycling fee). We are required to collect the CBE waste recycling fee from your customers upon the purchase of a new or refurbished CBE product. The fee is 1.5 percent of the retail sales price for each CBE product sold or leased for use in California and should not exceed $15 per product.

Additionally, the fee must be listed as a separate line item on the receipt and cannot be included in the sales tax calculation.

Our VAR has recommended an approach but I imagine this would apply to a large number of Acumatica customers. How are others handling this? If it’s helpful, we use Avalara as our tax provider and will shortly upgrade to 2026R1.

We use Suretax, but have been using it to collect the California Tire Fee.  We just set the product type (in CCH Suretax it’s the “Transaction Type Code”) to one that is for tires.  I’m sure Avalara has the same functionality; when I used Avalara on a previous ERP we had thousands of product types that we had to manage.

Regarding separating it out...we’re still working on that part.  Acumatica likes to lump taxes together.
