in the home screen for sales quotes. When I go to do a search for a customer or quote number using the search bar it does not do anything.

Please check if the Generic Inquiry has been modified. As per the test results in the sales demo with no modification in the generic inquiry system populates the values when we search for the quote number

Please find attached the XML GI file for the original Sales Quote Generic Inquiry.
You can upload this XML file into the Generic Inquiry screen by using the Import from XML option.
You can compare both GI’s to understand whether it is modified or not.
