Tool to Mass Update BOMs / Production Orders

Does anyone know of a tool to mass update/copy/populate BOMs or Production Orders?

My company is an engineer-to-order business that manufacture custom products under 4-5 product lines. For instance, Product Line #1 can have a seemingly infinite number of one-off configurations. To capture these types of products we typically use an “empty” BOM with just the routing and use the production order as the document where the BOM gets filled out (combined effort from estimating/project management/engineering departments).

However, our end users are facing some difficulty with the time it takes to populate / mass-update production orders. For instance, we typically see sales orders of 80-100 repeatable (or non-repeatable which takes longer) one-off products that all fall under the same product line. These are specific to the customer and do not all ship at the same time so we choose to break them up by the ship date. So typically we would see a Sales Order with 80-100 individual lines since they all have distinct designations (similar to serial number).

Currently, our estimating/PM/Eng. departments go into each individual production order and add the necessary material to build the equipment. But this takes a long time and can take even longer if the customer requests a material change, which then causes a lot of strain on the department who has to update this material since they would have to update it 80-100 times.

If there is any tool that can add/remove material en masse, mass copy/paste one production order to multiple production orders in one go, upload material through excel to multiple production orders, etc. it would be a great help!

You should be able to create an import scenario to update the Production Order Details form.  Each Material needs to reference the operation number,  You will have to use a separate import to delete lines by referencing the operation number and searching for the material line to delete using the Inventory ID - <linenbr> = -2 is the delete action..  There are rules for updating Production Order Details. If the status is planned than no rules, if released then you have to place it on hold, if in process, then you can’t delete lines that have been issued or reduce the quantity required to be less than the actual issued.

There are other community articles on ETO manufacturing you might review.  They also mention using CADTalk of CADLink to update production orders.
