Planning BOM Best Practices

We’re trying to use planning BOMs, but don’t understand how Acumatica intends for us to handle them. Does anyone know of a good resource that explains the intended functionality?

 

What we are envisioning is:

  1. Engineering creates a BOM that is somehow designated as “Planning”
    1. This BOM would not be able to be used to create a production order
    2. This BOM would work for MRP planning
  2. At some point, engineering converts the planning BOM to a “real” BOM
  3. Then manufacturing can create a production order and proceed as normal. 

Is the above at all similar to the process Acumatica designed?

Only where it is assigned on Stock Item or Item Warehouse Details.

Nothing on the BOM itself.

You could add a user defined field and business events if you needed a more granular solution.

MRP will look first at the planning BOM before looking at the Default BOM.

When creating a Production Order the default BOM is always used.

You would need to use BOM status and effective dates to control moving a planning BOM to a real BOM and manually remove the Planning BOM reference on the Item

    Is there a way for someone to tell if a BOM is in planning as opposed to released? Maybe we aren’t effectively using BOM Statuses, if that is the general method.

      We tested making a production order where the assembly only had a BOM loaded in “Planning BOM”, but the production order moved it to the “Default BOM” location. How does Acumatica know that it’s a planning BOM vs a Default BOM?

      what do you mean moved it?  I would recommend you contact Acumatica support so they can take a closer look at your data.

      How do you make a planning BOM without it loading in as the items default BOM? It seems to save it as the default BOM before I can even set it to the planning BOM.

      manually blank out default BOM, manually assign it to planning BOM

      the planning BOM is intended for companies that want MRP to pickup components.

      It is not a way to distinguish two different types of BOMS

      it is the BOM that will be used for planning
