Issue with Suggested Safety Stock Calculation in MRP

The MRP procedures state that the "Calculate Replenishment Parameters" function in the inventory module can be used to review the following items:

  • Safety Stock/Reorder Point
  • Lot Sizes

However, there is a note in the "Creation of a Replenishment Class" section specifying:

"If you want to configure automatic calculation of replenishment parameters, you must use only replenishment classes with the Purchase or Transfer replenishment source. For details, see Configuration of Replenishment: Replenishment Methods and Configuration of Replenishment: Demand Forecast Model."

We are deploying the usage of MRP and want to have suggested safety stocks or reorder points under different service levels as part of our internal ABC Inventory Management Strategy. However, when calculating the replenishment parameters, only parameters associated with demand are shown (as we get the demand with the top accessible assembly). No information is shown for lead time.

The item is manufactured and has an associated BOM. The finished good (highest accessible assembly) does not have a direct associated supply lead time, but the lead times should come from the children components. The BOM has two children, both of which are purchased. We assumed that the lead time average and standard deviation would either roll up or take the maximum of the children.

Is this why the suggested safety stock is resulting in zero?

Is the suggested safety stock only calculated for retail items where sales and purchases use the same item number?

If the children are manufactured, does this mean the calculation of the suggested safety stock won't work?

You cannot generate those suggested safety stock numbers if using MRP planning method unfornuately. It requires the item replenishment method of planning to provide the functionality.

@richardjorge

I would suggest creating a product idea to have MRP/DRP automatically calculate planning parameters.

Thank you @andrestamour43 . I will submit this.
