How to account for issued materials

Is there a way to find the quantity of a stock item issued to a production order? As it stands, once the raw material is issued to the job it no longer exists in inventory, however we always over-issue material and need to account for the over-issue when ordering more raw material.  We may have 15-20 production orders with material issued at the same time so going one by one would be inefficient.  I would assume there is some sort of WIP location that stores this data but I cant find it.

Once material is issued to a production order, it is assumed to be used in that production order.  One way to address this would be to transfer material to a production point of use warehouse location rather than issue it to a production order.  The actual quantity used in production could then be backflushed or issued to the production order.  The extra raw material would remain in the point of use warehouse location or could be transferred back to the warehouse storage location.  Either way, it would remain in inventory and the quantity would be accounted for when suggesting replenishment.
