Different order quantities for Make vs Buy on same item

We have a stock item that is primarily manufactured, but can also be purchased / outsourced when required.

Since the Item Master allows only one Replenishment Source, we would like to understand how MRP handles order quantities:

  1. If MRP generates a Manufacturing Order, does it use the Inventory Planning tab (min / lot size)?

  2. If the same item is planned as a Purchase Order, does it use the Vendor tab minimum order quantity?

As per my understanding, MRP behavior is driven by the Replenishment Source, and standard MRP does not support planning the same item as both Make and Buy automatically with different order quantities.
Please let me know if this understanding is correct or if there is a supported approach.

MRP/DRP currently does not observe min/max.

You can set the item replenishment source at the warehouse level.

MRP will recommend that you build/buy/transfer based on the source specified at the warehouse.

On Inventory Planning Display, even if the recommendation is to build, you can create a purchase order for the needed quantity.

      ​@angierowley75  Just to confirm my understanding: MRP does not use Min/Max as a reorder-point strategy (i.e., it does not replenish up to Max when below Min). Reorder Point is ignored by MRP, while Min Order Qty / Max Order Qty are only applied as lot-sizing constraints. Is that correct?”

      MRP observes Reorder Point and Safety Stock (driven by Stocking Method setting on Inventory Planning Preference) but does not observe min/max values/rules.

      Please reference the MRP whitepaper for more details 

       

      We have an active development project to address this - but it is not yet released.  Targeting 2026R2 or later.
