BOM item for estimate not for production

Have a scenario where we need to use a non stock item on a BOM for estimating but do not want to have it appear on production order.  Is there a way to do this out of the box without manually deleting?

There is nothing out of the box.  The creation of a Production Order copies directly from the BOM - there are no options to omit specific material.

Is the BOM only used once?  If not - could you create a new BOM revision prior to creating the Production Orders?

Perhaps someone in the community has created a customization which would be of help?

You could use a phantom item and exclude it?
