Any way to bring subassembly configuration into parent product configuration?

Hi everyone

I am hoping that someone here can help me answer this.

We are trying to build a production with subassemblies as features. The subassemblies themselves have configurable features as well. 

We are hoping that there is a way to have layered configuration at the parent product level. 

For example, once we choose Feature A (Subassembly A), the configuration further expands, to allow us to choose feature B of Subassembly A. 

Is there a way to accomplish this?

If this is not an option, does it mean that we have to create separate production orders for the subassemblies and configure each assembly from there?  Open to any suggestion you may have.
