BOM Attributes - Can't use a Selector Control Type?

The help documentation for BOM Attributes indicates that any attribute control type can be used:

 

However, when I created an Selector attribute for the Sales Order Number (the customer wants to be able to identify what sales order number the manufacturing order supports), that attribute isn’t available for selection:

Search for Attribute on BOM Attribute screen:

 

 

What am I missing??

In the BOM Attribute screen, Attribute ID does not allow Attributes of the Selector Control Type.
