Track Inventory ID from SO Invoice/Shipment back to PO Receipt

Does anyone know of a way to track the SO sales and shipment of an inventory ID back to the PO Receipt that was used to cost that item when invoiced?  The majority of our inventory is setup as FIFO costing, the rest is by serial number.
