Incorrectly Made an Inventory Issue to X

We accidentally made an Inventory Issue to Project X. Now we need to undo it.

Initial Transaction:  Inventory Issue

Tran. Type: Issue.

Inventory Source: Free Stock.

Inventory ID: [various Stock Items]

Attempted Return Transaction:  Inventory Issue

Tran. Type: Return

Inventory Source: Project Stock

Error

“The Project Stock inventory source cannot be used if the non-project code is selected in the line. Select a different inventory source or specify a project for this line.”

Question

Am I really supposed to make a Return with Inventory Source “Free Stock” for this? That’s not how I would reverse any other accidental Inventory Issue to the wrong project.

@aleonard716 Yes, Free Stock is the right source for this return.

X is the non-project code, and on 2025 R1 the Issues form (IN302000) applies two rules to the line's project. Project Stock can't be used with the non-project code at all. On a Return or Credit Memo line, Free Stock can be used only with the non-project code. So for X, the return goes in as Free Stock.

On a real project it's the other way around. A Return line with Free Stock is blocked there, which is why Project Stock is what you'd use to back out a wrong-project issue.

I tested it on 2025 R1: an issue from Free Stock to X, then a Return with Free Stock and X. The quantity went back to free stock in the same location, and the GL entry was the exact reverse of the issue.

When you enter the return, set each line's location to the one the original issue used. It can default to the item's receipt location instead. Check each line's unit cost against the original issue too, then release.

This is exactly what I needed to hear. Thank you very much for your detailed answer, and for doing the testing yourself!
