2025R1 - Inventory Source: "Free Stock" and "Project Stock" when Tracking by Location in projects

We have just upgraded to 2025R1 and are trying to understand the inventory sources “Free Stock” and “Project Stock”. Main question described below:

I’ve come across this basic description, but it’s not making sense to me based on our project settings:

 

In our projects we have the inventory tracking as “Track by location”.

 

For our projects we usually do “Project Drop-Ship” Purchase orders, so the inventory never shows up in our warehouse. Any inventory that we receive on normal purchase orders if available to be issued to any project.

MAIN QUESTION: When processing inventory receipts or issuing inventory to a project, it now makes us choose whether it is “Free Stock” or “Project Stock”. We don’t want to classify it as such. Should we be worried about how it is classifying the stock? When issuing it to a project, the project will not be offered as a choice if we select “Free Stock” as you can see here:

 

It only allows us to issue it to the project if we select “Project Stock” as the inventory source. 

 

Any thoughts on this? Hoping for some help in understanding it.

In the release notes for 25R1 starting on page 161 Projects and Construction:  Improvements in Tracking Project Inventory.

Then on page 175 -177, the section Projects and Constructions: Usage of Free Stock for Project with Project -Specific Inventory.

      Thanks so much for taking time to answer.

      On Pg. 175 it says this:

      For the projects that have the Track by Project Quantity or Track by Project Quantity and Cost inventory tracking mode selected on the Summary tab of the Projects (PM301000) form, a user now can specify whether free stock items can be issued for these projects. On the same tab, the Allow Issue from Free Stock check box is now available (see the following screenshot).

       

      In our case you will see that we have the “Project Specific Inventory” unchecked for our projects in the “Enable/Disable Features screen.

       

      Because we have this unchecked, it would be nice if this free stock/inventory stock would not show up for us when issuing inventory to a job. It just creates another step in the process because we are forced to select “project stock” before we can issue any inventory to a job. It will not allow us to issue Free Stock.

      Thanks again! I hope Acumatica will look into this a bit more.

        I’d be interested to know if any contractors issuing inventory to projects use “free stock”.

          We have the same problem. It would be nce if you could at least set the default to project inventory instead of free stock.

            We have multiple clients using both project inventory and free stock in the same project. What I have found is that it works well when the transactions are created from a process or action, for example if a production order linked to a project has a material line that calls for 100 each of a stock item and you have 50 each of that item as project inventory and 50 each as free stock it will issue the 50 from project stock and the remaining 50 from free stock without any manual intervention (you must have the allow issue from free stock set on the project).

            As stated, it is when you are creating a manual transaction that it becomes a burden having to set the inventory source manually, what I would like to see Acumatica do is automatically set it to project stock when a project is selected on the line and allow it to be changed if a user wanted to set it to free stock.
