A visual view of the Body at the Email Templates screen gives you the most detail without sending the email somewhere. If it’s not enough - yes, sending it to your test email and checking it from there is the best solution.
I remember working on a visual representation of the Notification Template (same thing as the Email Template, just sent differently) on button click at a custom screen, but creating a customization for the testing might be an overkill for your case.
