Imposter Syndrome: Recognizing our vulnerabilities!

Hi everyone,

We are already halfway through Women’s History Month! I hope these past few weeks you’ve had the opportunity to be inspired by some of the women in your personal and professional lives.

Today, I want to touch on an important topic called imposter syndrome—feeling unworthy of your position or role. No matter what title we hold, how many years of experience we’ve had, or how successful we are, women tend to underestimate their own leadership potential.

Women are also more likely than men to suffer from imposter syndrome. A study of 300 senior executives from a range of organizations found that the percentage of women who experience feeling unworthy of their positions was more than double the percentage of men: 54% vs. 24%.

As women, we can feel like imposters in many aspects of our lives—in our careers, in our friendships, as mothers, and the list can go on.

It’s okay to feel vulnerable. However, we should not let it stop us from moving forward. We also shouldn’t let these feelings become a reason to settle for less because of a glass ceiling society has imposed.

We all have women we admire and respect. What we sometimes don’t see is the vulnerability behind their visible successes. Let’s take a step back to recognize, reflect on, and understand the fact that vulnerability isn’t a shortcoming. It’s a step toward connection, support, and living and succeeding as our authentic selves in the positions we have worked diligently to earn!
