Picking without shipment created

Hi all,

Does anyone know if there’s a way to pick Sales Order lines without having to create a shipment first?

Right now, the only way we can pick is once a shipment’s been created, and we run everything through our WMS. The standard pick/pack/ship process doesn’t really suit our setup, and I’m wondering if there’s a better way to pre-pick stock into a designated area ahead of time?

We’ve thought about just transferring the available stock into that area manually, then once the shipment’s created, reviewing the lines and updating them to the right location — but honestly, I’m hoping there’s a smoother, more efficient (ideally system-driven) method out there.

Anyone come across a workaround or setup for this?

I’ve seen several companies that want to do this.  I have not seen a great work around for any of it that doesn’t introduce a lot of human error.  To me, it makes the most sense that you don’t pick an order until it’s ready to go (or back ordering product).

One somewhat workaround might be to play with these Sales Order Preferences.  Add zero lines for items not in stock.  It will create the shipment with all of the items on it.  Then you can print a pick list and do your pre-pick.

I’d agree, but our business have challenges with getting in the stock in time currently. we are working on it, but it’ll take time until we can stabilise our inbounds, and ideally we want to pick everything that is available and allocated, and once the other stock arrives, we could allocate those and pick just a few items with short lead time, rather than the full order.

We have allowed Back Orders in some occasions, but it’s not ideal, so I try to find other options.
