Question

Max Shelf Life field on Stock Items Record

We are trying to find a solution to alert users that we have shelf-life inventory that is nearing expiration date. Is anyone using the MAX SHELF LIFE field on the Stock Item under the Inventory Planning tab? If so, how does it work? If there are other processes that people are using, I’d love to hear them. We want to be more proactive with identifying product nearing it life span.  Thanks!

hey @skuhnert ,

Out of the box, the values in the field are user-enterable. Can you let me know if any customizations applied? Or if already any automations applied.

No customizations or automations applied.  My biggest question is if a value is entered (i.e. 365 days), what does the system do with the information?  How is it usable?  Thanks!

I think it used only in the mobile app to create lot/serial expiration dates during a receipt.

Hey @skuhnert , the field is just for information purpose only. How have you been using expiration date? Are you using Lot/Serial #. So we can setup automation based off to compare the shelf Life days & Expiration dates. Would like to know more on your processes.

Hi @skuhnert

The Max Shelf Life field on the Stock Item (Inventory Planning tab) is used by the planning engine to control replenishment logic based on how long an item can remain in inventory. It does not generate expiration alerts or notify users when items are nearing expiry.

To proactively track expiring inventory, use lot/serial tracking with expiration dates, create a Generic Inquiry to show items expiring within a set number of days, and optionally use Business Events to send alerts. This approach provides visibility and automated notifications, which Max Shelf Life alone does not.

Hope this will help you.

We are not using lot/serial # functionality.  I was hoping the system could calculate the Max Shelf Life based on the receipt date and help alert us when inventory is nearing expiration.  Since we’re not using lot/serial #’s, my thought was that the system could still calculate when inventory is nearing expiration based on FIFO.

So in that scenario, I assume, can compare the Receipt Date & the Shelf Life & create a GI out of it to trigger notifications for the items.
