Question

Inventory part relations

We have lots of cases where we have parts which are used together, for example an enclosure and its backpan each with seperate part numbers. When we buy these items does acumatica have a way to tie these numbers together so that if either of those items are ordered it would also know to order the other item so that we can make sure we have the matching parts.

Thanks

@benlane25,

There is no generic ‘auto-add related item’ feature, but there are supported ways to handle this.

1. Stock Kit (most common for enclosure + backplane)

If the enclosure and backplane are always required together, the correct approach is a Stock Kit.

  • Create a Stock Item marked as Is a Kit

  • Add the enclosure and backplane as kit components

  • When the kit is ordered or purchased, both components are automatically included

  • Inventory is tracked at the component level

This is the standard Acumatica solution for items that must always ship or be purchased together.

2. BOM / Manufacturing (if you assemble or build)

If you assemble the enclosure + backplane (even lightly):

  • Use a Bill of Material (BOM)

  • Order or build the finished item

  • Acumatica explodes the BOM and plans demand for both components

This is appropriate if there is any production or assembly step.

3. Cross-Sell / Suggested Items (optional pairing)

If the second item is recommended but not mandatory:

  • Use Related Items / Cross-Sell configuration

  • The system can suggest the matching part during order entry

  • The user must still confirm and add it

This does not auto-order, but helps prevent mistakes.
