Yes, you do that during the assembly process.
Click the Line Details button and it will pop up for you to enter the Serial number.

What is the Lot/Serial Class on the actual item?

Can you confirm that the Lot/Serial Class of the Kit is a serialized one?
If not that could be the root cause as the system doesn’t expect a Serial Number.
You are right. I created a new item and played with the different lot/serial classes and now it works.
