Question

Is it possible to have UPS Integrated Shipping give return labels for Ground regardless of the original orders ship via code?

For example if I were to create a shipment for UPS Express or Two Day Air, the return label would be UPS ground regardless? Is this something that is possible to do?

Hi,

Can you spell out the workflow that users do now and what is the goal. At what point do you want the return label to be generated and is there any printing involved?

After creating the Sales Order, we release the shipment. Then we add box(es), their description and weight to the shipment.

We then select the shipping terms, and shop for rates, if it wasn’t already selected before.

Finally, we remove the hold and confirm the shipment. The labels are created, with the return label being the same ship type.

The UPS integration is building exactly the same request as it would for regular shipment, but with the difference of sending the Shipment.ReturnService.Code=9 when you configure the Ship Via code to also retrieve the return labels.

Technically, you can extend the UpsRestClient.cs class and overwrite the CreateShipmentRequest function and change the Shipment.Service.Code to always be “03” if the request is built for a return label.

Another out-of-the-box option, with no customization needed, is to disable “Generate Return Label Automatically” at the Ship Via level.

On the shipment screen, first select the Ship Via you want to use for the return label and click Get Return Labels. Then, select the Ship Via you'd like to use for shipping the package and confirm shipment. This will generate both labels.

Once a shipment is confirmed, you can no longer change the Ship Via setting.
