We are not using WMS (yet).  How do you handle shipping pallets and pallet costs?  We have a mix of stock items that are finished goods and BOM-based goods so doing fixed overheads I don’t think would work.

We have 7 different pallet sizes we have as stock items since we track inventory on them, cost and if we charge the customer for it.  We also have mixed item pallets so while we know item X is 60 to a pallet, Adding Item A, B, C, D and E may not be 60 to a pallet any more due to variations in size of the box, etc.

With our current system we have 1 stock item pallet.  The sales person enters the sales order, adds the stock items and if we charge for the pallet they enter a price.  When the warehouse picks/ships the order they add the pallet item to the sales order at $0 (unless sales person added it already with a price) and the quantity of pallets used.  That follows through to the invoice and shows the pallet quantity and how much they were charged (if anything).

With Acumatica we have a little different shipping workflow.  Essentially the “create shipments” step isn’t there on our old system.  In this process the only way I can see to “add” the quantity of pallets is to delete the shipment, add the pallets, create the shipment again then process it through.  Any other methods to do this?

@travislawson Would you consider freight function? Using Ship Via, Box, etc.

You can define the pallet as Box, then add the box into a ship via. When you select this ship via in a sales order, you can then choose the box. Also, in the ship via, you can define freight cost based on either volume, weight, ship zone, or combination of the three. System will calculate the freight cost automatically in the sales order without you add them manually. This then flows through to shipment and invoice.

If the box and ship via are not specified in sales order but the shipment has been created, you don't need to delete shipment because you just specify these info within Shipping and Packages tab of the shipment.

Ah, forgot to mention we’re using ShipHawk for our shipping piece.  We don’t use the shipping tab as the order gets exported to ShipHawk and built in their system.  After that and it ships, it back feeds into Shiphawk with the packaging info.

I know it returns a freight cost from ShipHawk and isn’t taking from the ship via’s.

At this time we’re thinking of moving it to a fixed overhead and adding it to the workcenters instead.

Hi @travislawson were you able to find a solution? Thank you!

Hi @travislawson were you able to find a solution? Thank you!

Basically @Chris Hackett we just started including it in overhead calculations of our bill of materials.  Our logic was that we produce and we buy/resell products.  The produced items require us to put them on a pallet.  Bought items generally come with a pallet already.  In the few instances where we might need an extra pallet that isn’t accounted for we figure was negligible.
